- The second round of DLC for Resident Evil 5 is finally here and follows in the footsteps of Resident Evil 5. While the ‘Lost in Nightmares’ DLC focused on events leading into Resident Evil 5 and was grounded in exploration and puzzle solving, ‘Desperate Escape’ follows the story of Jill Valentine and Josh escaping the horror of onslaught after onslaught of enemies trying to do them in. However, while both DLC packs are in fact different, the common thread they both share is that they are well worth their $5 (400 MS Points).
I’m sure by now everyone has completed at least one playthrough of Resident Evil 5, of course that’s not the case if you just picked up Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition. Following the events of your first encounter with Albert Wesker and Jill Valentine late in the Resident Evil 5 story, you take control of Jill with Josh from the main story in an attempt to make it to a chopper to go help Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar. After leaving the underground temple, Jill and Josh run into wave after wave of infected enemies as you attempt to get important information to Chris and Sheva and eventually escaping to the facilities grounds. This sounds easy enough, however for those who have played through the game; it’s no easy feat on the harder difficulties.
Just like in the ‘Lost in Nightmares’ DLC, depending on the difficulty level you play, you are allowed access to certain weapons in order to complete the task at hand. Headshots and great teamwork are essential to surviving this short, but sweet epic battle. Along the way, you will come across several different types of enemies from the main game, including our favorite chainsaw wielding baddy and armored-plated soldiers. The harder the difficulty level, the more of these individuals you will encounter along the way. Just when you think you have faced all you can handle, towards the end of the DLC you are required to survive a certain amount of time as you await the helicopter to land on the helipad. It is here, you will definitely run into some baddies wielding portable gun turrets, which can damper to style quickly if not careful.
If you are a fan of Resident Evil 5, then you will love this DLC simply because it’s more of the same. For veterans of the series, the ‘Lost in Nightmares’ DLC pack was more of their style as the gameplay was more about puzzles, exploration and simply surviving giant weapon-wielding enemies. What would have been nice is if the DLC could have been woven into the actual storyline, that way it entices players to play through the game once again, and when the part comes up to go with Jill/Josh of Sheva/Chris, you can decide what part to play out. However, whether you are a fan of the classic Resident Evil style of play or Resident Evil 5, for $5 (400 MS Points) you can’t go wrong with this solid gameplay experience.
Just like with the ‘Lost in Nightmares’ DLC, you will also gain access to Mercenaries Reunion and the ability to utilize two new characters. This time, you gain access to Rebecca Chambers (Resident Evil Zero) and our good man Josh from Resident Evil 5. If you picked up ‘Lost in Nightmares’ then you can mix and match these two characters with Excella Gionne, Barry Burton and the rest of the Resident Evil 5 cast for some intense multiplayer action.
‘Desperate Escapes’ is another successful attempt at Capcom extending the gaming experience of Resident Evil 5. While some may favor the flavor of ‘Lost in Nightmares’, ‘Desperate Escape’ is a solid and intense piece of DLC to be enjoyed. Personally, I preferred the gameplay mechanics of ‘Lost in Nightmare’, however for the low price of this DLC and all the content that came with it, it was and is well worth your hard earned money/points.7.5/
