It's not every day that you come across a videogame that challenges your intellect, as well as your vocabulary. While this isn't the first of its kind, Ymedia Labs has been able to capture the essence of scrabble and mix it with crossword puzzles to create a whole new gaming experience known as Scruzzleword. Seeing how this game is a quick pick up and go title, Ymedia Labs wanted to ensure mass acceptance and decided to release their title for the iPod Touch and iPhone handhelds.
While this gaming experience is easy to pick up and enjoy, I feel people should invest some time within the Help section of the menu. Here, you can find out more about the Beginner and Challenge modes, while also watching a video tutorial explaining the basic concepts of the game and how to play the game. Though itís not a requirement to play the game, players will find that some of the most basic concepts of the game can go overlooked simply by hopping straight into the game.
When it comes to Scruzzleword, there really isn't much to the game. There are two distinct modes. Within Beginner Mode you are tasked with figuring out various words through short clues within the context of a crossword puzzle board. To move letters around the player would simply tap a letter, and then tap another letter for which the two would switch places. Each puzzle you play comes with four letters that are already highlighted yellow. That means that the letters are in the correct locations. Once a letter becomes yellow, you can use said letter to find new phrases to figure out. Whatís unique about the setup of the each and every puzzle is the fact that only correct letters are scattered throughout the board. So itís simply a matter of getting them into their correct position.
In regards to Challenge Mode, be prepared to put your skills to the test. Unlike the Beginner mode, with Challenge mode you are required to know a bit about the game of scrabble. Within this mode, players must figure out the various words with little help from the game itself. While this is definitely a challenge, the game doesnít penalize you for an incorrect tile switch, which allows players to freely just swap tiles left and right until they get them into the correct spots. Does that take away from the nature of the game, yes, however the resulting factor would be an extremely longer playing time to complete each puzzle as oppose to taking the time to figure the mode out for future puzzles.
For the price of $2, Scruzzleword is well worth the money. However, even if the game was $5, maybe even $10, I say itís well worth the money simply because itís a title that challenges both season veterans of crossword puzzles, while offering newbies the chance to redeem themselves from past failed attempts at crossword puzzles. With the developer looking into adding additional puzzles and options to this title in the future, the game is poised to get more attention than many high profile and big budget console titles released today.
At the end of the day, Scruzzleword is yet another reason why gamers who own an iPhone should fire them up, log into the App Store and drop $2 for Ymedia Labs latest fore into video games. It will be the best $2 ever spent once you realize your vocabulary and intellect has improved from the creative combination of crossword puzzles and the strategy of scrabble.7.5/
