Lets be honest, everyone would love to drive, if not own a Ferrari. With the cheapest one costing around $200,000-$300,000 each, the average Joe has to look elsewhere to gets their fills. Due to this longing for exotic cars, games like Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsports have been created to fill the void. However, instead of focusing on a vast roster of different car brands and models, game developer Eutechnyx has decided to focus one of the most exotic and famous brands in the world, Ferrari. And because of this, Ferrari Challenge: Trofeo Pirelli is born. Offering up a sizeable roster of different model Ferraris’ and roster of tracks, how well does this title stack up against the competition?
With any racing title, you expect a variety of modes to choose from, along with that solid single-player campaign, pitting you against some of the best A.I. controlled drivers within the game. Ferrari Challenge meets those expectations, while offering a bit of uniqueness to the selection. The F430 Challenge, the heart of Ferrari Challenge, puts you behind the wheels of a Ferrari F430, which you must utilized throughout the entire mode to unlock new cars and earn enough credits to increase your car library. Depending on how quickly you grasp the controls of the game and utilize the different settings, this mode can take as long as 4 hours to complete. These settings range from braking, traction control and ABS, all of which can be turned off if you are opting for as realistic simulation racing experience as possible
You can also compete in the typical Arcade, Quick Race and Time Trial modes. There is also the inclusion of Trophy Mode and Top Trumps. Within trophy mode, you are allowed to race the various vehicles you acquire from winning races within the Challenge mode. Top Trumps is a card-esque game where you decide where your car will beat a computer opponent. While this mode seems intriguing, some may find it to be nothing but fluff.
Visually, games like Gran Turismo 5: Prologue has set the bar for what realistic vehicles look like within a video game, and I am pleased to say that Ferrari Challenge met this challenge head on. Each of the 40+ Ferrari models is incredible in detailed from the inside out. Eutechnyx made sure to address each and every curve of these beauties, while also paying close attention the dynamics of the interiors. Thanks to the dynamic physics engine utilized, each and every car can take damage as if it was a real car. Scratches can appear from minor incursions, while larger collisions can result in body parts being damage and/or removed from the vehicle's body.
Not stopping there, Eutechnyx also paid attention to each and every race track, from the physical track to the atmospheric presentation via weather effects. I will admit that from afar, the tracks lack creative differences which would separate their appearance from one another; it doesn't stop the developers from making each and every driving experience memorable in its own right.
The lasting appeal of Ferrari Challenge comes from the vast exotic cars and the inclusion of an online mode. The inclusion of an online brings about your typical race modes and the ability to race against 15 other player-controlled racers in an epic 16 car race. While the community for Ferrari Challenge isn't as grand as Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, you can always find a few people to race against to test your skills. With the promise of new vehicles and tracks every month, the online experience and community will continually get better and better. Overall
With a solid roster of Ferrari models (old and new) to choose from, a realistic representation of the Ferrari brand and various race tracks, and very intuitive gameplay mechanics, there isn't a reason not to find enjoyment within Ferrari Challenge. Considering this title will be compared with the likes of Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport, Eutechnyx did a great job on giving this title its own legs to stand upon.7.8/
