Every new console needs a good first person shooter to start it off. However, Killzone was suspiciously absent at this yearís E3. Luckily for Sony, Insomniac (developer of Ratchet and Clank) is prepping a brand new first-person shooter for Sonyís upcoming next-gen console, the PS3. Set in an alternate 1951 where World War II never happened, Resistance Fall of Man has you saving the remnants of mankind from an alien invasion.
The story of Resistance begins in September 1921 when Russian closes off its boarders to foreign nations. Years later in 1938, Russian cities are discovered abandoned with no sign of survivors. By 1949, the rest of mainland Europe has been consumed by an alien force known only as the Chimera. In 1951, Operation Morning Star begins in a last ditch effort to save the last free-standing European country. When battling a large unstoppable only, you need a winning combination and thereís no better combination than that of the United States and Great Britain. Resistance puts you in the shoes of Sgt. Nathan Hale of the U.S. Army rangers and tasked with aiding your fellow Americans and the British to defend Great Britain and free the rest of Europe and Asia.
Resistance is essentially Call of Duty with aliens. Much of the game puts you in the middle of large center piece battles fighting alongside hundreds of Allies against hundreds of Chimera. At your disposal is a large assortment of weapons. Having worked on the Ratchet and Clank games for the past couple of years, Insomniac has created many strange and exotic weapons you wouldnít expect to see in 1951. For example, one grenade, when thrown, launches a barrage of spikes piercing your foes. For the E3 demo, the weapon of choice was the M5A2 Carbine. Many weapons have an alternate mode of fire as well. The M5A2 is capable of shooting a plasma ball into the air. The player then fires directly into the ball. Once the ball is filled, it will explode launching a volley of bullets in every direction. All the single player levels are available for co-op play, though it is uncertain whether or not the game will feature co-op over the internet.
Multiplayer online can hold up to 32 players at once. The maps are big and the battles are epic. Only the basic deathmatch was shown and Insomniac didnít go into details about other modes. Itís safe to say that Resistance will be the one of the biggest online games to hit consoles since Halo 2.
Resistance: Fall of Man is shaping up to be an excellent Playstation 3 game. With stiff competition from Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony is going to be need games like this to keep momentum. The game is expected to hit stores alongside the Playstation 3. Hopefully it does not fall behind and lives up to its hype.
