June 22, 2010 - Paradox Interactive has traditionally been known for their in depth strategy games, but they have recently found some incredible success in the simulation niche. In a small meeting room at the back of the E3 exhibit hall, I got the opportunity to sit down with the developers and learn all about their latest title, Ship Simulator Extremes.

Unfortunately, there was no playable demo, but what I saw was certainly impressive! I watched a series of game play videos showing a variety of environments and scenarios. While the graphics weren’t incredibly impressive, the amount of time and energy spent in creating an authentic sailing experience was positively epic!

The playable vessels are all designed straight from the authentic blueprints. Players can sail yachts around Bora Bora, engage in some Whale Wars in the Green Peace Rainbow Vessel (which actually is still being built in real life!) and even engage in some life saving missions on the coast guard vessels. The game is certainly not action packed, it is to sailing what Grand Turismo is to racing= meticulously accurate!

Apparently, these simulators are so accurate, they have been used in training programs across the US; furthermore, a variety of real life ship captains enjoy these games and give their unofficial seals of approval. The game is so in depth that you can actually navigate by the stars based on the year! With all the advanced instrument panels modern ships (and thus the game) offer, this method is for hard core purists only!

Aside from leisurely sails across the globe, there is also an intense single player campaign with more action packed missions including fire and evacuation scenarios and Green Peace missions that look like they were taken straight out of Whale Wars! The common question, “can you play as the whalers?” has not really been addressed yet…but maybe in a future DLC? Who knows!

Aside from that, there is an online multiplayer mode that lets you cooperate with other captains and coordinate for missions. There is also a level editor mode that lets you customize a mission and share it with your friends. Apparently it’s a hobby of some captains to custom build missions based on their real life experiences and send them out on the active online community to see if other would be captains could sail a mile in their proverbial boots!

If you are a nautical kind of guy – this will be right up your ally!
